Butea superba extract is a big-sized climbing plant with characteristics similar to those of Pueraria mirifica, except for a larger and thicker leaf. The root is cylindrical in shape. The root has a yellow in color and changes to brown when cut.
There is no lumen. Its starch granules are larger than those of Pueraria mirifica. They both are typically found in same areas such as the Northern, Northeastern, and Western regions of Thailand. The active ingredients found in Butea are 4¢-methoxyfisetin or 3,7,3¢-trihydroxy-4¢-methoxyflavone and 4¢-methoxyfisetin-7-O-b-D-glucopyranoside or 3,5¢-dihydroxy-4¢-methoxyflavone-7-O-b-D-glucopyranoside. Reportedly, the chemicals in Butea are non-mutagenic and can generate a vasodilating effect, especially in a penis, the same effect as is caused by Viagraâ. Butea extract can also be used in ingested products, such as a dietary supplement, and in topical application, as in cosmetic products.
